EJNAR MIKKELSENILA ALUARPIA DISCOVERY TRIP

Frontline Foundation has contributed to a discovery trip for students enrolled in Ejnar Mikkelsenila Aluarpia elementary school, in Ittoqqortoormiit, East Greenland (approximate population of 300 inhabitants). Perched at the entrance to Scoresbysund Fjord (the largest fjord system worldwide), Ittoqqortoormiit is one of the most remote settlements in the world. Local residents still depend on sea ice for transport and hunting purposes. Traditional harvesting remains a significant cultural-economic factor with limited employment opportunities available in this settlement.

Because climate change affects traditional hunting grounds in this settlement, the local community is in the process to develop projects to inspire their younger residents and to enhance their economic outlook. The goals of the aforementioned trip are to give students an impression of the Danish culture, to allow them to learn about sectors, such as agriculture, fishing and marine research, and to help them practice and develop their language skills. Organizers also expect the trip to give students an insight into opportunities to further their education and to continue their studies beyond their time at school.
